Growing babes.

Last week the kiddos had their regular checkups; M2 her 18 month well baby visit and P5 his 2 month. Growth stats:

M2 - 22 lbs 9 oz (25th percentile), 34 inches (97th percentile)

P5 - 13 lbs 10.5 oz (97th percentile), 25 inches (97th percentile)

I think that in a few years P5 may catch up to his sister in size to the point where people will think they are twins (this happens with my 7 and 8 year old niece and nephew who are now the same size).

The pediatrician sent us home with an assessment to do with M2. I completed it over a few day period and filled in the results on the scoring sheet. Basically she scored very well for gross and fine motor skills, but communication she was borderline behind. I think there are a few factors at play here; the communication skills area seemed to weigh heavily on the ability to put two+ words together, and that is a skill that M2 is just not doing yet. She knows a lot of words, but doesn't put them together quite yet. (The most adorable thing lately is that she is obsessed with The Cat in the Hat cartoon and will stand in front of the TV and say, "Hat! Hat!") Another factor is that she got her teeth late. Her first two teeth came in at 1 year of age, and just in the past few weeks she's gotten 4 more for a total of 6 teeth. I know that teeth play a role in speech and ability to pronounce certain word sounds.

We got a bit of a shock about P5. Apparently the pediatrician is concerned about the birthmark on his lower back because birthmarks in that spot similar to his can often be a marker for spina bifida occulta, a mild form of spina bifida. He will likely be having an MRI soon to further examine his spine and see if he has this condition. When we came home from the doctors appt, my mother bear instinct kicked in. I held, rocked, and kissed my little boy non-stop that afternoon and evening. He is such a sweet little boy, and I love him so much. I remember once holding M2 while I was pregnant with P5 and I wondered how I could possibly have more love to give to another baby, but it's possible. When I look at the two of them together or when I see M2 give him a kiss, my heart feels like it is going to explode, and I feel like the luckiest person ever to have both of these little people in my life.

Here are some pics since it's been awhile since I posted any:

  1. Good to read your update! My sister and I are 16 months apart and for YEARS we were about the same height and weight. People always thought we were twins. About the birthmark- yeah, sometimes it can be related to spina bifida occulta, but it's not common. Good they're ruling it out! I'll be saying some prayers for you guys.
